Britan’s Inspectorate of Prisons has issued a report describing G4S as slow to react to increasing levels of violence. According to a report, the security strategy did not make the necessary links between drugs, gangs, and violence and little had been done to address the disproportionate number of young adults involved in violent incidents.
Echo News reported that six inmates have taken their lives in the past four years, while there were nearly 900 incidents of prisoners self-harming themselves in 2013; up from just 290 in 2009. Andrew Neilson with the Howard League for Penal Reform said, “Most concerning of all was the finding that Altcourse had failed to take on board all recommendations made after three prisoners took their lives. This is the human cost of G4S running prisons on the cheap.”
