Journalism Student & Folk Dancer, Lina Khattab, Sentenced to Six Months
On February 17, 2015, journalism student and folk dancer, Lina Khattab, was sentenced to six months in HaSharon Prison and a 6000 Shekel fine. Khattab, 17 years of age, also received a three-year suspended sentence for what the Israeli Military Court called “participating in a protest in solidarity with Palestinian political prisoners,” in front of the Ofer prison.
Lina Khattab, who is a Journalism student at Birzeit University, was kidnapped by Israeli soldiers on December 13, 2014, during a nonviolent protest organized by students marking the 47th anniversary of the establishment of the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
Khattab was released from prison on June 11, 2014. Soon after her release, she changed her major at Bir Zeit University from journalism to law, noting she would become a lawyer to defend political prisoners.
