G4S has been stripped of its contract at the Rainsbrook Youth Detention Center after 16 years of running the facility. Prior to losing the contract, UK regulators issued a report that said, “Poor staff behaviour has led to some young people being subject to degrading treatment, racist comments, and being cared for by staff who were under the influence of illegal drugs.”
After reviewing the report, Frances Cook, Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform said, “This is the worst report on a prison I have ever seen because it is a catalogue of abusive practices that have been inflicted on young children who have no escape.” She added, “These child jails run for profit are secretive and should never have been set up in the first place. Rainsbrook should be closed immediately. No child is safe at this jail.”
On February 26, 2016, following years of scandals, G4S announced it would sell its UK Children’s Services Business. The decision came just weeks after the BBC aired an investigative report on G4S operations at the Medway Secure Training Centre in Kent.
